10.11.2005 [STT] Greenpeace stops vessel of Finlands Stora Enso in Lubeck
(10.11.2005)
Some forty demonstators belonging to the environmental group Greenpeace have prevented the paper cargo carrying ship of the Finland-based forestry giant Stora Enso from entering the port of Lubeck in Germany.
The ship of the name Antares could not unload its cargo because demonstartors opposing Stora Enso methods of harvesting raw material hung onto the hoist bridge.
Demonstrators want to stop the logging of old-growth forests and try to stop the sale of paper made of such forests. Germany 1.7 million tonnes of paper annually and is the biggest client of the Finnish paper industry.
The demonstration follows the Monday protest, when Greenpeace activists blockaded Antares passage from the Veitsiluoto facility in Finland. Greenpeace activists are blaming Stora Enso for destroying old-growth forests. Stora Enso is the biggest client of Metsähallitus, the Finnish State forestry enterprise.
Metsähallitus has, claims Greenpeace, logged the habitats of endangered species and launched several loggings in the grazing areas of reindeer without the negotiations with reindeers herders required by law.
