Oil and Gas Exploitation on Arctic Indigenous
Peoples’ Territories By Rune S.
Fjellheim, John B. Henriksen Human Rights,
International Law and Corporate Social Responsibility
The Resource Centre for the Rights of Indigenous
Peoples’ gáldu čála No 4/2006 contains two articles addressing certain
core social, legal and economic questions related to oil and gas
operations in indigenous areas, written by Mr. Rune S. Fjellheim and Mr.
John B. Henriksen respectively. Around the world,
including in the Arctic, there are disputes about ownership, utilization,
management and conservation of traditional indigenous lands and resources
- often caused by decisions or attempts to use traditional indigenous
lands and resources for industrial purposes, including oil and gas
exploration. This situation represents an enormous challenge, and in some
cases threatens indigenous societies and their economies, cultures and
ways of life.

A New Era for Indigenous Peoples BY HADI KHOSRAVI
LILE The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues
Very little has been written about the UN Permanent
Forum for Indigenous Issues. This edition of Gáldu čála is one of the very
first academic works on the Permanent Forum. This institution, more than
any other international organization, has created a voice for indigenous
peoples internationally. If there is one thing that all indigenous peoples
in the world have in common it is that they have been oppressed by their
own government and they do not want the government to speak on their behalf.
