The Saami Council and Suoma Sámiid Guovddášsearvi call for Visionary Mentors.

These 2 one-year, full-time positions will guide future advocates for Sápmi, offering a unique opportunity for experienced professionals to contribute significantly to the Sámi community’s future, while growing personally and professionally.


Your contribution

  • Lead with wisdom: Apply your extensive experience and knowledge of Sámi society and cross-border collaboration to inspire and educate.

  • Foster individual growth: Guide young advocates through the challenges of organisational and advocacy work, adjusting tasks to individual needs.

  • Collaborative innovation: Work alongside staff and the other mentor, contributing to the broader objectives of ReCap ASáp.

What you bring

  • A robust background in relevant areas, paired with broad knowledge of Sámi society and experience in Sámi organisations.

  • A proven track record of cross-border collaboration within Sápmi.

  • Exceptional communication skills, coupled with the ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.

  • Language proficiency in Sámi and one of the Nordic languages is prioritised, alongside fluent English.

Information on the Advocacy Program

The Interreg funded project ReCap ASáp: Regaining Capacity in a changing Sápmi are initiating a 1 year Advocacy program. The program will include 3 participants, engaged full-time for 12 months. There will be one participant from each of the countries: Finland, Norway and Sweden. 

The program will provide training on indigenous rights and Sámi and indigenous issues on national or international level and promote a Sámi perspective. 

The program participants will learn about the Sámi society, get training in advocacy work and hands-on experience in organisational work. The program will also provide an opportunity to get acquainted with the ways in which the Saami Council, Suoma Sámiid Guovddášsearvi and other Sámi organisations and institutions advocate for the promotion of Sámi issues both on an international and national level.

Information on the Mentor Positions

The Interreg project ReCap ASáp: Regaining Capacity in a changing Sápmi is hiring 2 mentors for a Sámi Advocacy Program. The mentor positions are 100% for 12 months. There will be 1 mentor position hired in Finland and 1 position hired in Sweden.  

The 2 mentors will be working full time within the project ReCap ASáp in close collaboration with the other project staff. The main work task for the mentors will be to plan for and execute the Advocacy Program. The mentors will guide the program participants through the specific assignments within the program. The Mentors will also adjust tasks and assignments to each of the participants on an individual basis. Other related work tasks within the ReCap ASáp project can be included depending on mentor capacity. The work includes travels within Sápmi.

    • Relevant education and/or experience,

    • Broad knowledge of the Sámi society,

    • Knowledge of work in Sámi organisations,

    • Experience of cross border work in Sápmi,

    • Good communication skills,

    • Good ability to work independently as well as collaborate well with others,

    • Sámi language competence is prioritised. The applicant must also be fluent in one of the Nordic languages and in addition the work also requires good language skills in both written and spoken English.

The Saami Council is a voluntary and independent cultural, political, and cooperative organization for Sámi organizations in Finland, Norway, the Russian Federation, and Sweden.

The overarching goal of the Saami Council is to safeguard the rights and interests of the Sámi as one people, as well as to strengthen the Sámi's cross-border affiliations. The Saami Council also works internationally to promote and secure the interests and rights of the Sámi and other indigenous peoples. The Saami Council has four thematic departments: the Arctic and Environmental Affairs Department, the Human Rights Department, the Cultural Department, and the EU Department.
