The Saami Council Invites the Sámi Art And Culture Field to Inari September 20–22, 2023

The Saami Council invites the Sámi art and culture field to Inari on 20–22 September 2023. KulturSápmi is the common meeting place for sámi yoikers, artisans, artists, and others working in the cultural sector.

KulturSápmi 2022, Váhčir.

This is the fourth time the KulturSápmi has been organized, and the first time it will be on the Finnish side of Sápmi. The event aims to create a discussion arena and networking opportunities, strengthen connections, encourage cooperation across national borders, and get to know current Sámi art and culture projects. The main organizer of the event is the Saami Council, and the partners are Ijahis idja, Viermie K., Lásságámmi, Dáiddadállu, Sámi Parliament of Norway, Sámi Parliament of Sweden, Art Promotion Center (Taike), and the Nordic Council of Ministers.

- KulturSápmi has become a very important and comfortable meeting place for our art and culture field, where we feel at home and where we can get to know each other and discuss current issues, says Christina Hætta, head of the Saami Council's cultural unit.

The program includes presentations of art and culture projects, panel discussions, and joint dinners

This year, the theme of KulturSápmi is truth, reconciliation, and decolonization. The event's more detailed program will be published during the summer, but as in previous years, there will be presentations of current art and culture projects and panel discussions on important topics.

- Truth and reconciliation processes are underway in Sápmi, and the commission on the Norwegian side has just published its report. These processes open up an opportunity for the Sámi cultural sector to discuss what the Sámi art and cultural sector would be like if Norwegianization had not happened. Through scenario thinking, we aim to map out based on what values and conditions the cultural sector must be supported in the future, Hætta reflects.

Those who register by July 9th will receive free accommodation and meals
