“Ruoktu Residency” for kultur-Sápmi
The Saami Council invites Sámi cultural workers and artists to apply for a three-month work grant for an artist residency that takes place in your own home - ruoktu. And your home is, as Áillohaš says “in my heart and I carry it with me”.
The coronavirus pandemic has also challenged kultur-Sápmi and limited the opportunities to work and meet each other due to the closed borders. Our wish for the “Ruoktu Residency” is to provide you with time for new ideas to develop, redefine your practice, and way of working, as well as reflect on your artistry and renew it.
In this residency, We also want to give you the opportunity to share and collaborate with other artists from Sápmi. Discussions with artists from the same and different fields are often some of the most rewarding aspects of an artist residence. Knowing that someone is working, thinking, practising, exploring and experimenting at the same time as you is inspiring your own work. In Ruoktu Residency, this is achieved through digital meeting places where closed borders cannot affect us. Weekly coffee breaks, work presentations, reading groups and chats will hopefully create a sense of community during Ruoktu Residency.
The Saami Council will grant 5 Ruoktu Residencies for 2021. Two grants are awarded to artists/cultural workers on the Russian side of Sápmi, and three to artists/cultural workers on the Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish sides of Sápmi.
The granted amount for the Ruoktu Residency for Sámi artists and cultural workers on the Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian side of Sápmi is 90.000 NOK.
The granted amount for the Ruoktu Residency for Sámi artists and cultural workers on the Russian side of Sápmi is 30.000 NOK.
