The horrific findings of a mass grave containing the remains of 215 indigenous children at a former residential school in British Columbia, Canada, manifests the atrocities committed against Indigenous Peoples by authorities through generations.

Multiple generations of indigenous children were taken from their families, from their communities, and abused mentally, sexually, emotionally and physically in residential schools. Many never returned home. The trauma caused by the terrifying experiences in these institutions, built to systematically eradicate indigenous peoples and cultures, have destroyed individuals, communities, cultures, and the indigenous communities still struggle with the consequences. The generations of today carry the pain of their families and ancestors, and discrimination and racism are so well founded in the society that moving forward might seem impossible for many. Words are not sufficient, implementation of Indigenous Peoples' rights is the key to changing the system. If reconciliation is the goal, then the majority population needs to get on board and the truth must be sought and displayed. The stories, the heartbreaking stories from survivors, both those who are with us and those who have wandered, must be told, and authorities must make sure that every rock is turned on the path towards change.

The Saami Council would like to express our grief over the children that never returned, and our solidarity with the Tk’emlúps te Secwe̓pemc people.

The Saami Council acknowledges and honors the stories told by survivors of the residential schools. These stories must be heard and the atrocities must never be forgotten, nor repeated.

The Saami Council stands with the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island in their demand to have all former residential school sites investigated.

The Saami Council supports the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island in their call for action from the Canadian government.
