The Saami Council strongly supports the Kanaka Maoli and the protection of the sacred site of Mauna Kea in Hawaii.

The long-lasting struggle against the construction of a Thirty Meter Telscope (TMT) on Mauna Kea has drawn international attention to the the continued violation of human rights, as well as state and federal laws, in Hawai’i. The desecration of Mauna Kea continues with yet another construction of a telescope, despite the opposition by Kanaka Maoli.

To Kanaka Maoli, the Native Hawaiians, Mauna Kea is a place for healing, recreation and spiritual contemplation. Mauna Kea is also an ecologically sensitive area, the home of rare animals and plant species, threatened by extinction.

The Saami Council condemns the arrests made on July 17, as twenty protectors, mostly Kupuna (Elders), were arrested by federal police for protecting te Mauna by blocking the road.

The Saami Council urge the The Government of Hawaii to respect human rights, to stop the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on top of Mauna Kea and to stop arrests of Mauna Kea Protectors.
