The Saami Council has hired Tonje Margrete Winsnes Johansen from Gussanjárga – Kunes in Lágesvuotna – Laksefjord as an employee in our Arctic and Environmental Unit. Johansen will especially be working with climate change issues and sustainable community development in the Arctic.

The Saami Council has hired Tonje Johansen as a co-worker for the Arctic and Environmental Unit where she will be working together with Gunn-Britt Retter.

Johansen is from the coastal saami community of Gussanjárga/Kunes, and is currently residing in Guovdageaidnu/Kautokeino. Johansen holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. In her master thesis Johansen did a statistical review of natural resource and land use conflicts in Indigenous territories. Johansen will be focusing on climate change issues and sustainable development through her work in the Saami Council.

– Through my studies I have focused on social development and gender issues, and I find the interplay between sustainable development of the society and the use of nature especially interesting. So I am looking forward to working with these issues within Sápmi, says Johansen.
