Saami Council Allocated Cultural Grants for 2022

The Saami Council’s Cultural Committee decided at its meeting on 8th and 9th December 2021 on the allocating of cultural grants for 2022. Grants were distributed widely to different sectors of culture throughout the Sápmi for a total of NOK 1,750,000. Cultural grants aim to support, revitalize, and promote a unified Sámi art and culture sector. Individual Sámi, Sámi groups, and associations can apply for grants. In the distribution of grants, particular emphasis is placed on measures that extend to the entire Sápmi. Cultural grants are funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Norwegian Sámi Parliament.

Applications from all over the Sápmi - a record number of applications from the Russian side of Sápmi

The Saami Council received 96 applications for the Saami Council’s annual cultural funds all over the Sápmi. Of the applications, 63 were project and travelling grant applications, and 33 were working grant applications. The number of applications has increased every year. This year, applications came especially from the Russian side of Sápmi, where we received a record number of applications.

- It was great to see that sámi from the Russian side are enthusiastic about applying for funds for cultural activities. When processing applications, the diversity of the Saami culture was once again noted, as the applications had come to such a wide range of cultural activities all over the Sápmi, says Matti Aikio, the chair of the Cultural Committee.

Roman Yakovlev, Sunna Kitti, and Ann Holmgren Aurebekk received a working scholarship

The Saami Council distributes three scholarships of NOK 100,000 or NOK 200,000 annually to topical artists or cultural workers in Sápmi. This year, Roman Yakovlev (language, NOK 100,000), Sunna Kitti (cartoon, NOK 200,000), and Ann Holmgren Aurebekk (film, NOK 200,000) received a working scholarship. - We received a lot of really good applications from different cultural sectors. It was challenging to decide on the allocating of scholarships because there were so many good applications. A large number of applications are reflecting a huge need for scholarships in Sápmi. There are not so many scholarships available in Sápmi, explains Matti and wishes good luck to all recipients of cultural funds.
