Apply For a Home Residency Scholarship From the Saami Council

Sámi handcrafters, artists, and cultural workers from all over Sápmi can now apply for the Saami Council's scholarship for a home residency for the spring of 2023. The application period is until November 14, 2022.

the Saami council wants to strengthen the working opportunities for artists

The purpose of the home residency scholarships is to offer the Sámi art and culture sector the opportunity to delve into creative work and, at the same time, create the opportunity to work in a creative community with other actors in the Sámi cultural sector.

-       There are very few working scholarship opportunities in Sapmi. They are very important for the cultural sector of Sápmi so that artists can prioritize their time for working and producing. The Saami Council wants to strengthen the working opportunities for artists and the cultural sector by offering the possibility of a home residency, says Unna -Maari Pulska, culture secretary of the Saami Council.

Digital Residency

The home residency will be organized in the spring of 2023 and will last three months, between March 1 and May 31, 2023. A total of 5 scholarships are being awarded, and the amount of each scholarship is NOK 50,000. It is a digital residency where the participants form a community digitally through discussions and presentations. The home residency can be located at home, in the fells, or anywhere, as long as there is an internet connection.

Residency strengthens community across national borders

Pulska says that the home residency of the Saami Council will now be organized for the second time. At the first home residency, there were Carola Grahn (art), Ingir Ane Bål (film), Sami Ásllat Laiti (Sámi handicraft), Valentina Sovkina (traditional knowledge), and Vitaly Sapelnikova (Sámi handicraft). They received good feedback from the previous residency.

-       Previous participants said that they often have to work alone. They felt it was inspiring to share their thoughts and plans in the residency with others who understand creative work and the process. They presented each other's work in online meetings and were able to develop their works through joint discussions, says Pulska.

The Saami Council enourages also young people to apply

Pulska says that by the home residency, they also want to strengthen the connection between different generations in the field of Sámi culture. They also hope that young artists, artisans, and cultural workers will apply for the home residency. The residency is aimed at people over 18 years old. You can apply for the home residence scholarship and other cultural grants for 2023 on the Saami Council's website by November 14, 2022. The Cultural Committee of the Saami Council decides on the allocation.
