Sámi Youth Biodiversity Workshop
A New Deal For People and Nature
Thursday 26th November: 17.30- 19.30
How is your relationship with Nature?
The planet is facing another mass extinction. Up to 1 million plant and animal species are at risk. We live in the Arctic, an area where climate change and industrialization is rapidly threatening biodiversity and limiting wild nature.
Traditional Sámi reindeer herders are facing challenges with extractive industries, while at the same time experiencing the adverse effects of warm winters and even warmer summers. Sámi fisheries are seeing an invasion of new species into arctic waters, as with many fisheries globally.
With this in mind, It is our pleasure to invite you to a workshop on a global deal for people, nature and biodiversity.
In may 2021, the United Nations’ Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) will develop an action plan for halting the loss of biodiversity (post-2020 biodiversity framework). The Framework can be considered the Paris Agreement for biodiversity.
The workshop will open for discussions on the biodiversity crisis and strategies to impact it from a sámi youth perspective. How does the ongoing biodiversity crisis affect you and your society, and what can we do to reverse it?
This workshop is a part of a nordic project, facilitated by the Nordic Council in collaboration with the Sami Council, to involve youth voices in the coming CBD framework. The recommendations you develop through these discussions will contribute to the voice of the Nordic youth in the UN Framework negotiations.
