Course on the EU market, Sámi livelihoods and Entrepreneurship

The Saami Council’s Filling the EU-Sápmi knowledge gaps project, together with Samernas Institute, invite to a course on the EU internal market, Sámi livelihoods, and Entrepreneurship. It will be a two-day online course on March 24th-25th, 2021.

The EU provides several opportunities to develop new ways of entrepreneurship. This course is aimed at the Sámi society at large, but especially at established Sámi businesses or entrepreneurs who are developing a business idea, or others who want to know how the EU market can provide opportunities for Sápmi to promote our unique products like food, culture, film, design, technology and more.

The course will provide knowledge about the possibilities for practical support schemes and the EU’s goals for entrepreneurship and SMEs. Additionally, the course helps build networks between Sámi businesses and create new opportunities for collaborations in the field.

Participants can expect an active learning environment about a topic that can be viewed as complex and expect an adapted competence building about the EU market in a Sámi context.
- We hope that the course will work as a liaison between participants and actors who can assist in the process of connecting to the EU market, says the head of the EU-unit, Elle Merete Omma.

- Our observations show that there are relatively few Sámi companies who are exporting products to the EU, and that is a shame because we think that the large EU market can contribute to an increased value-creation to Sápmi. We have unique products in Sápmi and comparative advantages like clean food, nature, unique history, and culture. It deserves to be commercialized on our own premises so that it creates fair and sustainable economic growth, Omma adds.

The course will contain both group work and inspirational key-note speakers. It will give an overall framework for EUs politics on entrepreneurship and access to markets.
- We want to take it down to become more hands-on, where the participants can receive concrete tools on how to take their business to the next level. And since it is a web-based course, we hope it makes it easier for Sámi businesses to participate when they don’t have to travel anywhere, especially in these pandemic times, says Omma.

Interpretation will be available in Northern Sámi and Norwegian/Swedish.
