NEW SAAMI LANGUAGE LEARNING APP LAUNCHED

The Sami Council has participated in a multi-year project together with partners in Europe to develop a language learning app, called IndyLan. Now the app has finally been launched, and can be downloaded for free in both the AppStore and GooglePlay.

Through this app, English, Spanish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish speakers can learn some of these endangered languages:

  • Northern Saami

  • Gaelic

  • Scots

  • Cornish

  • Basque

  • Galician

We believe that the app will be a good complement to those who want to learn Saami language. The app is suitable for both those who do not know anything, and those who already know a little, but want to practice more, says Áile Jávo, the Secretary General at the Saami Council.

The project was initiated in 2019, when it was the international year for indigenous languages. 2022 is the start of the UN's decade for indigenous languages, and it is particularly fitting that the app will be launched just this year.

We need everyone who wants to learn Sami, whether it is at a level where they can use the language actively in everyday life or if it is just to say “Good day” in that language. Therefore, all aids that can contribute to it are important, Jávo points out

The project is funded by the EU program Erasmus +.
