Webinar on the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act
The Saami Council is hosting an event on the EU Critical Raw Materials Act!
There is growing concern about mining projects and the EU Critical Raw Materials Act concerning Sámi peoples rights and the potential impacts on the Sápmi and traditional livelihoods. To answer this need for more information, the Saami Council is hosting a webinar and a panel discussion, with guests from Vapsten sameby and Gabna sameby, and the EU Commission. There will be possible to ask questions at the end of the session.
The objective of the webinar is to increase understanding on how the EU Critical Raw Materials Act and the concept of “Strategic Projects” function under the regulation. The Sámi rightsholders and other indigenous stakeholders are provided with accurate, detailed information on these topics, and offer a valuable platform to clarify the objectives of the Act, in addition to fostering knowledge and dialogue on Indigenous rights within EU Strategic initiatives.
It is anticipated that after the webinar, the EU Commission and Sámi rightsholders will gain increased awareness and understanding of each other’s perspectives, and what challenges EU initiatives may pose to the Sámi society as a whole.
