Sámi Advocacy Program

Do you want to enhance your skills in how to advocate for Sámi issues on an international and national level, and get hands-on experience in organisational work in Sápmi? Then this advocacy program is for you!

3 paid positions, 1 year 100%

The Interreg funded project ReCap ASáp: Regaining capacity in a changing Sápmi are recruiting three participants for a one-year Advocacy program. The three paid positions are full-time and lasts 12 months. There will be one position in each of the countries: Finland, Norway and Sweden.

What does the Advocacy program offer?

This program will provide excellent training for anyone considering a future working on Sámi and indigenous issues, and indigenous rights on a national or international level in the EU, UN and Arctic Council. The program is designed to promote a Sámi perspective.

The program participants will learn about the Sámi society, get training in advocacy work, and hands-on experience in organisational work. The program will also provide an opportunity to get acquainted with the ways in which the Saami Council, Suoma Sámiid Guovddášsearvi and other Sámi organisations and institutions advocate for the promotion of Sámi issues both on an international and national level.

The program offers:

  • Training in Sámi society, cross-border collaborations, and Sámi organisational work,

  • The opportunity to put academic theory into practice,

  • The opportunity to gain valuable work experience,

  • Insight into the processes and policies of Sámi organisations,

  • The opportunity to build an increased network in Sápmi,

  • The opportunity to contribute to the day-to-day work in a Sámi working environment.

  • An interest in learning about Sámi and Indigenous working methods;

  • Willingness to work in a cross-border environment;

  • Enthusiasm for contributing to the daily work of the Sámi organisations;

  • Commitment to participating in the Advocacy Program for the whole 1 year period.


Practical information

  • The place of work will be discussed with selected candidates. The options are home office combined with/or at one of the Saami Council or SSG officess. The positions will include travels.

    The participants will be guided by two mentors working full time with the Advocacy Program. The mentors will guide the program participants through the specific assignments within the program, and adjust tasks and assignments to each of the Program participants on an individual basis.

  • The positions’ duration is 1 September 2024 - 31 August 2025. The participants will receive a monthly salary during the program period.

  • Sámi who wants to work with Sámi organisations and Sámi issues. There is no age limit to participating in the Advocacy Program.

    Knowledge of the Sámi society and especially experience of Sámi organisations is beneficial. Good collaboration and communication skills, good writing skills, and ability to work independently. Good language skills in English, both written and spoken, is a requirement. Skills in any of the Sámi languages is beneficial.

The application should consist of a personal letter. the letter should be written in English, maximum one page stating your background, work experience, education and any other qualifications relevant to this positions. The letter should clearly outline why you are interested in this position, your specific areas of interest and how you plan to make use of the Advocacy training after concluding the program.

The Saami Council is a voluntary and independent cultural, political, and cooperative organization for Sámi organizations in Finland, Norway, the Russian Federation, and Sweden.

The overarching goal of the Saami Council is to safeguard the rights and interests of the Sámi as one people, as well as to strengthen the Sámi's cross-border affiliations. The Saami Council also works internationally to promote and secure the interests and rights of the Sámi and other indigenous peoples. The Saami Council has four thematic departments: the Arctic and Environmental Affairs Department, the Human Rights Department, the Cultural Department, and the EU Department.
